Menu:

1. You can make better food choices when you aren't starving hungry. You may be more likely to stay out of the fast food lane or junk food aisle at the supermarket when your hunger is under control.

2. If you are the cook for the family trying using more creative words to describe a new recipe. Try these - macaroni and cheese or savory three cheese pasta. Which sounds more appetizing.

3. Try to improve the atmosphere of the dining experience. Try turning off the television or radio. Perhaps maybe you may learn to taste your food rather than gulping it and communicate better with your family.

4. Trying adding more vegetables to recipes. This will increase the volume of food that you can eat without increasing categories.

5. Try making comfort foods much more comforting. Serve them family style instead of dishing foods onto the individual plates in the kitchen.

6. Try to clear up disagreements with other family members before you eat. People tend to eat more food when they are sad or angry than when they are happy.

7. Keep in mind the gender differences when making comfort foods. Men tend to prefer a main dish comfort food; whereas women prefer their comfort food as snacks that are quick to prepare and have little mess in cleanup.

8. Keep in mind birth order. Children with numerous siblings tend to eat their favorite food first; while only children eat their favorite foods last.

9. Encourage your family to make their favorite foods fruit and vegetables. These could decrease their weight.

10. Slow down! Try chewing, tasting, and savoring each and every bite. Play soothing music (classical). Think about each and every flavor in each bite.

Try to follow these and you will be ready to go in no time!

Your metabolism is the rate at which your body digests food and turns it into energy. The higher this is, the better, so here are some foods that raise your metabolism. It should be noted that: a) this is similar, but at the same time very different to a previous post, and b) all foods indirectly raise metabolism, by putting it to work. These foods are just better.

8.Green Tea
Of course my favorite, everyone knows it, metabolism is greatly risen by the delightful tea that is green. Not only that, but of course it has antioxidants.

7.Water
Water flushes out toxins, and all other stuff that causes problems to your body. Water also acts as a appetite suppressant which will indirectly help you lose weight!

6.Soup
So far we are all about liquids. Soup is a good appeitizer to choose because it is a great combo of both solids and liquids. It fills you up quick, and will do a great job.

5.Grapefruit (NO JOKE!)
Its not just a myth, or a funny weird al song. There was a research project done at Scripps Clinic which showed an average weight loss of 3.6 lbs after 12 weeks for people who ate a half grapefruit with each meal.

4.Low Fat Yogurt
Low fat yogurt is a rich source of weight-loss-friendly calcium, and also contains a decent amount of protein.

3.Lean Turkey
Lean turkey, is exactly what its name says. Its lean, its an amazing source of protein, and will help your metabolism an extra boost. Turkey is also a cheap alternative to chicken, in a time when prices are rising.

2. Hot Peppers
As I have discussed in a previous post, hot peppers are great for raising metabolism. Now I know why though. Hot peppers contain Capsaicin which stimulates, and releases more stress hormones, which causes a raise in metabolism.

1. Oatmeal
Oatmeal is an extremely slow absorbing carb that also has cholesterol fighting capabilities and a ton of fiber in it! Make sure you choose steel cut or rolled oats, not the instant ones as they are packed with sugar. Oatmeal has withstood the test of time and will keep you feeling full for hours on end!

Anyhow, try to incorporate some of these foods into your diet, and I promise you will see the fat come off quickly if you do.

Being overweight and obese can make you feel embarrassed and uncomfortable in company. If you have been doing the wrong things to lose weight then it always pays to admit one's faults as this in turn allows you to put things right! Take a look at the following reasons why you do not seem to lose weight.

Wrong diet.
Eating the wrong types of food is one of the most common factors that lead to obesity. Giving into the temptation of eating out regularly, especially in fast-food centers will make you consume more calories than usual. If you cannot give up the fried food, rich chocolates and the French fries, you have only yourself to blame. You need to substitute these foods with foods that have less fat content and are more nutritious like fruit and vegetables.

No proper exercise.
Making a half-hearted attempt at exercise is not going to help! If you think that a few exercises done once in a blue moon is going to help you shed those pounds, then you are mistaken. A strict exercise regime has to be followed every day. Only then will the body burn all the excess fat and you will see the results.

Secret Binging
If you have been sticking to a diet in order to decrease your calorie intake during the week, and have been secretly binging on burgers and sodas on the weekend, thinking that a "once a week binge" is not going to matter as long as you keep your diet for the rest of the week - you're mistaken. The moment you binge on all the wrong food you put back all the calories you saved during the week!

Wrong attitude.
If you are going around with a desperate feeling of fear and anxiety that you are not going to be able to shed the extra fat, then this negative attitude will influence your commitment and exercise regime. A good positive attitude is necessary to be successful.

Questions? 06/04/2009

I wanted to put the idea out there, that if anyone had questions they wanted to be answered, or were wondering about, Id be glad to do it. Im always looking for inspiring things to write new articles about, so if you have anything you are unsure of, I would be glad to do a mailbag type thing on this blog weekly.

You can contact me at the "Contact Me" page, and hopefully your answer will appear in the Q&A Section.

This is a very clever question I have been asked multiple times now, and never did any research into. Then one day, with a little spare time I looked into it and found out the truth for you readers.

In a pound of FAT there is approximately 3500 calories. That, for most people, is about 2 days worth of calories they would normally consume. That is not to confuse you though, as those 2000 or so calories a day you consume are what you NEED.

So if we want to lose fat, it should be simple. Create a calorie deficit of 3500 calories per week, and you will burn 1 lb of fat a week. Create a calorie deficit of 7000 a week (thats a lot of work) and you will lose 2 pounds.

The only flaw in this formula is....there are more calories in a pound of muscle than there is in a pound of fat. This is very confusing, so I am going to leave it at this for now, and maybe explain one day soon.

An important mistake that a lot of people make is that they often replace workouts with cardio sessions. This is not the way to effectively keep muscle and burn fat. In fact, you should do the antithesis.

While we may burn more calories for the duration of a workout doing cardio, we burn more calories, fat especially, throughout the course of a day by lifting weights. The reason for this is because after we workout our metabolism has been boosted for the remainder of the day. Do you ever wonder why you eat more after your workouts than before? This is why it is popular for people to lift weights early in the morning, it means they will ultimately burn more for the course of their day.

Knowing this, it is probably a wise decision to increase the amount of weight lifting sessions that you perform during a week. However, dont let that mean that you should overtrain your muscles. The best way to do this is to adopt a 5-7 day split. When I am bulking, I usually workout 3-4 days a week, but when I am cutting I increase it to 5-7 days a week. However, I work out each muscle the same amount of times during the course of a week for both strategies. I just spread it out to reap the benefits of an accelerated metabolism to help me burn fat.

Gum? 05/29/2009

I have never heard of this before, but sometimes when I am busy and hungry I ponder it. Could that fresh pack of gum in my pocket help me lose weight?

I thought about it, and the answer would be yes. If you can use gum to shoo away your cravings, your weight loss will be incredibly successful.

It doesn't matter if it has sugar in it or not, gum is basically plastic that you can chew on and gives you very little nutritionally, for a lot of good taste.

So, just a thought, but if you ever want to stick to your caloric limits for a day, try your favorite pack of gum.

This one goes out to all you diet drink drinkers. STOP now. Wanna know why?

Diet drinks, first off, taste like crap compared to the real deal. You could call that an opinion, but I have never in my life heard someone say they prefer diet coke to regular coke. Therefore, my opinion is right until proven otherwise.

Second of all, your not helping yourself! 0 Calories, compared to the 100 you get from a normal coke, isn't going to chang acesulfame e your belly. Not only that, but the aspartame/ acesulflame potassium are rumored to be bad for you.

If you really want something fizzy, try a San Benedictino. This carbonated water from Italy is quite something, and is available all over nowadays.

This sort of belongs in the Fitness Section, but because it has to do with slimming down, I felt I might as well put it here.

A "slow" way to get fit, is to walk. When I say slow though, I mean the speed you travel, not the time it takes to get fit. Getting fit by walking can be just as quick as running.

A brisk 45 minute walk burns upwards of 400 calories. If you think about that, if you did that every day, only 40 minutes a day, you could lose 1 lb a week. I don't know about your thoughts, but I figure thats a great starting point.

The other point I wanted to make is that walking is much less stress on your joints than other forms of workouts, so you can do it way more often.

Go for a walk, look around, and discover a new part of your city or town. If you want some tips for where to walk in toronto check out "Fitness In The GTA" on your left.

I touched on this in one of my earlier blogs, but i figured I would write a feature length on such a unknown fat burner.

Ginger is the underground root of the Ginger plant or Zingiber Officinale. Thats all technical stuff though, we are more here to talk about how Ginger will melt the fat off your mid-section.

Ginger is a thermogenic food, which means it stimulates the body to lose fat. This is great for you, because you don't even have to work to burn fat! That being said, having ginger before your workout will give even better effects.

So next time your at the supermarket, staring this less-than-attractive herb down, give it a try! You never know, it could end up changing your life..
